X-FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE - Movie Review

x files

In grand “X-Files” manner, the film’s storyline is being kept under wraps. This much can be revealed: It is a stand-alone story in the tradition of some of the show’s most acclaimed and beloved episodes, and takes the complicated relationship between Fox Mulder and Dana Scully in unexpected directions. Mulder continues his unshakable quest for the truth, and Scully, the passionate, ferociously intelligent physician, remains inextricably tied to Mulder’s pursuits.

TRUE DUDES REVIEW:

Without giving too much away, you know that there is a problem when the film’s most sympathetic character is a pedophile.  While I enjoyed the film, I think it’s going to disappoint a lot of the fans.

The god news: the story is original, and unpredictable.  The two leads are back and played perfectly (as always).  And there are a few (and only a few) tense and thrilling moments.  The bad news: much of this film is strictly dulls-ville.  The pacing is unusually slow for an X-Files story.  The characters go nowhere.  We learn nothing new about them and at the end of the film they are exactly the same as they were at the beginning.  While the story is unpredictable it’s mostly because the climax is so off the wall.

It was nice to see another X-Files but this will likely be the last.  I don’t see this doing well.  Casual viewers will be put off by the slowness of the story and by not being familiar with the characters, while fans will be disappointed by the lack of new Mulder/Scully relationship info.  All in all, X-Files: I Want To Believe is only mildly entertaining and just bizarre enough to keep the hardcore fans watching.

THE DARK KNIGHT - Movie Review

the dark knight

Batman and James Gordon join forces with Gotham’s new District Attorney, Harvey Dent, to take on a psychotic bank robber known as The Joker, whilst other forces plot against them, and Joker’s crimes grow more and more deadly.

TRUE DUDES REVIEW:

This is an amazing movie.  This is definitely the year of the great comic book movies, and The Dark Knight is right there with the rest.  Dark, brutal and surprising, this film is a must see.

It’s the performances that make this film.  Christian Bale, once again, is great in his role as the caped crusader.  And Gary Oldman does (as always) a nice job reprising his role of Jim Gordon.  But it’s Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent and Heath Ledger as The Joker that really make this film surpass the 2005 Batman Begins.  Their performances are nothing short of astonishing.  Also the film is filled with surprises and tension.  And the ending is extremely dark and depressing.  I can’t wait for part 3.  My only complaint is the run time.  While I was never bored, the film is lengthy.  The long periods of time between action scenes make it more noticeable.

HELLBOY 2: THE GOLDEN ARMY - Movie Review

hell boy 2

When the mythical world engages their campaign to take over the Earth, the U.S. government reaches out to the only department staffed to handle the potential catastrophe: The Bureau for Paranormal Research, who once again turns to the demon hero Hellboy and his teammates to stop a merciless dictator from carrying out his plan.

TRUE DUDES REVIEW:

This movie is fucking awesome!  Possibly the best comic book film of the summer and easily the most inventive.  Hellboy 2 sticks with the tone of the first film but really amps up the action, effects, and characters.

I think it was the small moments that made me love this movie.  Don’t get me wrong the action is great and the effects are awe inspiring (I couldn’t tell what was digital and what wasn’t).  But it was the smaller character moments that give the film it’s heart.  There is a little more comedy and a lot more romance.  The characters really grow in this sequel and become more than just retreads of their same characters from the first film.  Everyone’s acting is amazing.  Even behind layers of make up the actors expressions shine through.  Hellboy 2 is one of summer’s must see action flicks.

JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH - Movie Review

JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH

A geologist on a special mission with his nephew discovers the entrance into a previously unseen world.

TRUE DUDES REVIEW:

I fully expected this to suck, but was pleasantly surprised. I’m not saying this is a great movie or anything, but I enjoyed it.

If you have a choice between seeing this in 2D or 3D, I highly recommend the 3D. It definitely made the difference. While the film is fast paced and exciting, it is also unbelievably cheesy. The characters are corny and so is the dialog. It was the 3D effect and the amazing special effects that kept me glued to my seat. Brendan Frasier seems perfect for this type of family film. His acting was over the top and ridiculous, but it worked for this movie. The rest of the cast was decent (no one was spectacular or anything). While this won’t be winning any Academy Awards (except maybe for visual effects), it was overall a fun time at the movies.

HANCOCK - Movie Review

hancock

A hard-living superhero who has fallen out of favor with the public enters into a questionable relationship with the wife of the public relations professional who’s trying to repair his image.

TRUE DUDES REVIEW:

Hancock is a disappointment.  It could have been great.  It has a great concept and great actors.  But the film is only mildly entertaining.  While watching the film I got a weird sense that I was seeing the edited for tv version.
For starters, Hancock is a mess.  It is tonally all over the place.  The film starts off nicely as an action comedy, but halfway through it really loses it’s focus and becomes some sort of strange sci-fi drama.  And the drama is over almost as soon as it starts.  The film only has a measly 92 min. run time.  In the last 30 min. the film takes it’s bizarre turn, but doesn’t give the viewer enough time to care or understand exactly what is going on.  Too many questions are asked and not nearly enough of them are answered.  Also, the film is poorly edited.  Choppy and hard to follow, I barely knew or cared what was going on.  Hancock was originally rated R, but the powers that be (AKA asshole studio big wigs) wanted the safe PG-13 rating.  There may have been a decent cut of this film at one time, but it’s not the one that has been released.  Besides the originality of the basic premise and the acting ( which is all around good), there just is not enough to recommend about Hancock that makes it worth seeing.  I also feel that I should mention that the film’s chief villain (introduced in the last 20 min.) is among the worst and most poorly conceived bad guys of all time.  He is such a shitty criminal that it’s almost comical (even when it’s not supposed to be).

WANTED - Movie Review

wanted

Wesley Gibson is rescued from his miserable existence by the gun-toting Fox, a member of the Fraternity, a group of assassins to which Wesley’s recently murdered father belonged. As their new recruit, Wesley learns he’s truly a chip off the old block as he is trained by Fox and the Fraternity’s leader, Sloan — but what secrets are they hiding?

TRUE DUDES REVIEW:

Fuck this movie is cool!  It’s original, unexpected, and totally badass.  The tone of the film was like a cross between Fight Club and The Matrix.

I did not expect to like Wanted.  What a surprise!  I loved it!  It’s extremly fast paced and very violent.  A total blast from start to finish.  The entire cast does a great job.  I’ve never really been a big fan of lead James McAvoy, but that has all changed.  He was great in the role.  McAvoy really made the character relatable.  And as always, Angelina Jolie was sexy as hell.  The rest of the supporting cast was just as good.  The plot was exciting and not at all predictable.  I highly recommend giving Wanted a chance.

GET SMART - Movie Review

get smart

Maxwell Smart, Agent 86 for CONTROL, battles the forces of KAOS with the more-competent Agent 99 at his side.

TRUE DUDES REVIEW:

Another goofy 60’s t.v. show gets modernized for the big screen.  And the results are…goofy, and a bit more family friendly than you might expect.  While not exactly a laugh a minute, parts are definitely chuckle worthy and overall the film is fairly entertaining.

The cast is a bit of a mixed bag.  While everyone does a good job, I found Steve Carell’s Maxwell Smart a little bland.  Also bland was Alan Arkin’s Chief.  It’s not that they didn’t have anything to do, they were two of the main characters.  I just didn’t feel that invested in them.  Anne Hathaway on the other hand, as the third lead, was highly credible and easily the sexiest she has ever been.  Co-stars Dwayne Johnson (AKA The Rock), David Koechner, and Terry Crews all surprised as well.  They provided most of the laugh out loud moments.  Possibly the high point of the film was the action scenes.  They were surprisingly a plenty and robustly staged and executed.  While not a great movie by any means, Get Smart is a lightweight, but fun diversion.

THE INCREDIBLE HULK - Movie Review

THE INCREDIBLE HULK movie poster

Fugitive Dr. Bruce Banner must utilize the genetic accident that transforms him into a giant, rampaging hulk to stop a former soldier that purposely becomes an even more dangerous version.

TRUE DUDES REVIEW:

Let’s start by pretending that the Ang Lee version never happened.  It’s not that I thought Ang Lee’s Hulk was the worst film ever.  But it definitely was not the movie that I wanted it to be.  Louis Leterrier’s version however, is exactly what I wanted. It’s action packed and brutal.  The acting is excellant and the story is fast paced, yet filled with great characterization.
For starters, Edward Norton and Zack Penn’s script is ten times more action packed than Lee’s version ever wanted to be.  And the action is well staged and shockingly violent.  The romace angle is surpringly poignant and adds alot of depth to the story.  Gone is the giant, green cartoon bouncing from destination to destination.  In its place is a brooding, killing machine.  Edward Norton plays Banner with just the right amount of strength and fear and Liv Tyler plays Betty Ross as a strong, yet vunerable woman, who believes that even when Banner is the Hulk, a part of him still exists.  And finally,  Tim Roth as the Abomination, is meaner and scarier than ever.  He’s performance shows how easy it would be for even a good man to be corrupted by power.  Overall, The Incredible Hulk was awesome.  I think I liked it even better than Iron Man ( which is also awesome).  Not only is The Incredible Hulk have more action than Iron Man.  But the action is a little more hardcore.  Also, The Incredible Hulk’s roamce helps make the characters seems more human and therefore easier to relate to.

YOU DON’T MESS WITH THE ZOHAN - Movie Review

you dont mess with the zohan

A Mossad agent orchestrates a scenario that will allow him to move to New York City and reinvent himself as a hairstylist.

TRUE DUDES REVIEW:

Movie don’t get much dumber than this.  While better than Adam Sandler’s previous effort   (I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry), Zohan doesn’t come close to his classics (Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore).  I always expect better from Adam Sandler, but he just keeps letting me down.

I haven’t really liked an Adam Sandler film since Mr. Deeds.  His shit is just not that funny anymore.  Zohan is about on par with Anger Management.  I definitely laughed a few times, but only a few.  Sandler is likable, but the movie is so fucking retarded that I was embarrassed to be laughing.  Every joke was either sexual or racial, but it was typical Sandler (nothing we haven’t seen before).  For a 13 or 14 year old kid, this flick is probably hilarious.  But to an adult who has seen Sandler at his best, it’s just a rehash of his better film’s.

INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL - Movie Review

indiana jones

Famed archaeologist/adventurer Dr. Henry “Indiana” Jones is called back into action to stop a Soviet plot to uncover and use ancient artifacts in order to take over the world.

TRUE DUDES REVIEW:

Let me start by saying that I thought this movie was awesome.  I loved it and I had a great time watching it.  I probably had a stupid smile on my face for almost the entire thing.  However, I can understand the criticism.  The film is definitely hokey.  It’s ridiculous and nowhere near realistic, and it uses a bit too much CGI.  But you know what?  Even with all of those complaints, it’s still a fucking blast!  It may be my least favorite Indiana Jones flick, but that still makes it better than almost anything else.

It’s great to see Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones.  He hasn’t lost his touch.  Also I thought Shia LaBeouf was great as Indy’s sidekick Mutt.  It was their co-stars that didn’t fair as well.  The villians just aren’t that menacing and no one else is given very much to do.  That’s o.k. though, the action scenes more than make up for it.  They are nonstop and innventive.  At barely over two hours, the film flies by.  My biggest complaint has to do with George Lucas.  The viewer can almost tell which scenes were his idea.  Hint, they’re the ones that suck.  Without going too far into detail, I could have done without the prarie dogs and monkeys (you’ll see what I mean).  Overall, Indy 4 is fantastic.  I’ll be excited to see if there’s an Indy 5 in our future.  The ending seems to suggest that Harrison Fords’ not ready to give up the fedora just yet.
