MAMMA MIA - Movie Review

mamma mia

The story of a bride-to-be trying to find her real father told using hit songs by the popular ’70s group ABBA.

TRUE DUDES REVIEW:

I’m embarrassed to say I actually liked this.  Catchy songs and likable leads make up for a lackluster story and non stop corny-ness.  I’m not saying I loved it but it’s better than one might expect.

When the movie was over, I found myself humming some of the songs.  That was when I knew “Damnit, I liked that”.  Meryl Streep gives a nice performance and surprisingly has a great voice as the bride to be’s mother.  The bride, played by Amanda Seyfried, is so cute and likable you can’t help but route for her.  And of one of her three possible dads, Pierce Brosnan is charming and cool.  One of the film’s few setbacks was the extreme silliness that left me rolling my eyes for the majority of the movie.  Also the plot is only there to move the film along to it’s next song.  No surprises or twists of any kind (except for how much I liked the music).  While not an ABBA fan at all, the songs were the best part of the film.

HELLBOY 2: THE GOLDEN ARMY - Movie Review

hell boy 2

When the mythical world engages their campaign to take over the Earth, the U.S. government reaches out to the only department staffed to handle the potential catastrophe: The Bureau for Paranormal Research, who once again turns to the demon hero Hellboy and his teammates to stop a merciless dictator from carrying out his plan.

TRUE DUDES REVIEW:

This movie is fucking awesome!  Possibly the best comic book film of the summer and easily the most inventive.  Hellboy 2 sticks with the tone of the first film but really amps up the action, effects, and characters.

I think it was the small moments that made me love this movie.  Don’t get me wrong the action is great and the effects are awe inspiring (I couldn’t tell what was digital and what wasn’t).  But it was the smaller character moments that give the film it’s heart.  There is a little more comedy and a lot more romance.  The characters really grow in this sequel and become more than just retreads of their same characters from the first film.  Everyone’s acting is amazing.  Even behind layers of make up the actors expressions shine through.  Hellboy 2 is one of summer’s must see action flicks.

THE ROCKER - Movie Review

the rocker

The Rocker tells the story of a failed drummer who is given a second chance at fame. Robert “Fish” Fishman is the extremely dedicated and astoundingly passionate drummer for the eighties hair band Vesuvius, who is living the rock n’ roll dream until he is unceremoniously kicked out of the band. Twenty years after his rock star fantasies are destroyed, just when Fish has finally given up all hope, he hears that his nephew’s high school rock band A.D.D. is looking for a new drummer. They reluctantly make him the newest member of the band, giving him a chance to reclaim the rock God throne he’s always thought he deserved, and taking the young band along for the ride of their lives.

TRUE DUDES REVIEW:

Mostly generic, sometimes funny rock and roll comedy.  I laughed out loud a few times, but only a few.  This movie could have been a lot funnier, but mostly tries to keep things light and family oriented.
The cast is likable, especially Rain Wilson in the lead role as Fish.  My main problems with the film was the plot and the music.  This could just as easily have been another underdog sports flick.  They just replaced The Team with The Band.  It’s nothing that we all haven’t seen time and time again. As for the music, this is supposedly a rock comedy.  I found it surprisingly light on rock.  Most of the music is extremely poppy, generic garbage for the bubblegum crowd.  At least the jokes are a plenty, even if only half of them hit their target.

HANCOCK - Movie Review

hancock

A hard-living superhero who has fallen out of favor with the public enters into a questionable relationship with the wife of the public relations professional who’s trying to repair his image.

TRUE DUDES REVIEW:

Hancock is a disappointment.  It could have been great.  It has a great concept and great actors.  But the film is only mildly entertaining.  While watching the film I got a weird sense that I was seeing the edited for tv version.
For starters, Hancock is a mess.  It is tonally all over the place.  The film starts off nicely as an action comedy, but halfway through it really loses it’s focus and becomes some sort of strange sci-fi drama.  And the drama is over almost as soon as it starts.  The film only has a measly 92 min. run time.  In the last 30 min. the film takes it’s bizarre turn, but doesn’t give the viewer enough time to care or understand exactly what is going on.  Too many questions are asked and not nearly enough of them are answered.  Also, the film is poorly edited.  Choppy and hard to follow, I barely knew or cared what was going on.  Hancock was originally rated R, but the powers that be (AKA asshole studio big wigs) wanted the safe PG-13 rating.  There may have been a decent cut of this film at one time, but it’s not the one that has been released.  Besides the originality of the basic premise and the acting ( which is all around good), there just is not enough to recommend about Hancock that makes it worth seeing.  I also feel that I should mention that the film’s chief villain (introduced in the last 20 min.) is among the worst and most poorly conceived bad guys of all time.  He is such a shitty criminal that it’s almost comical (even when it’s not supposed to be).

GET SMART - Movie Review

get smart

Maxwell Smart, Agent 86 for CONTROL, battles the forces of KAOS with the more-competent Agent 99 at his side.

TRUE DUDES REVIEW:

Another goofy 60’s t.v. show gets modernized for the big screen.  And the results are…goofy, and a bit more family friendly than you might expect.  While not exactly a laugh a minute, parts are definitely chuckle worthy and overall the film is fairly entertaining.

The cast is a bit of a mixed bag.  While everyone does a good job, I found Steve Carell’s Maxwell Smart a little bland.  Also bland was Alan Arkin’s Chief.  It’s not that they didn’t have anything to do, they were two of the main characters.  I just didn’t feel that invested in them.  Anne Hathaway on the other hand, as the third lead, was highly credible and easily the sexiest she has ever been.  Co-stars Dwayne Johnson (AKA The Rock), David Koechner, and Terry Crews all surprised as well.  They provided most of the laugh out loud moments.  Possibly the high point of the film was the action scenes.  They were surprisingly a plenty and robustly staged and executed.  While not a great movie by any means, Get Smart is a lightweight, but fun diversion.

THE LOVE GURU - Movie Review

the love guru

Pitka an American raised outside of his country by gurus, returns to the States in order to break into the self-help business. His first challenge: To settle the romantic troubles and subsequent professional skid of a star hockey player whose wife left him for a rival athlete.

TRUE DUDES REVIEW:

Let’s face it.  Mike Myers has been doing the same tired shtick for years.  The Love Guru is more of the same boring shit filled with Myers’ trademark broad characterizations and silly accents.  I haven’t actually liked anything Mike Myers has done since So I Married An Axe Murderer and I was hoping The Love Guru would be his return to form.  Boy, was I fucking mistaken.
The Love Guru is essentially laugh free.  Ten minutes into this wretched mess I knew I was in for a terrible time.  Perhaps, if  I was retarded, this could have been a fun film.  But, I’m not and it wasn’t.  For starters, the film makes absolutely zero sense.  At first I thought I was just having trouble following the plot, but then I realized that there was no fucking plot.  Mike Myers and all his co-stars do a horrible job.  Only Jessica Alba and Megan Fox come away with any dignity and that’s because they are only in the movie for a short time.  All they were required to do was look hot and they, not surprisingly,  pull it off.  The script is lame and stupid.  It’s nothing more than the same jokes repeated over and over again.  And most of the jokes haven’t been funny since I was in the sixth grade anyway.  That’s exactly who this film was made for, sixth graders.  Twelve and thirteen year old boys will probably get a kick out of the sexual humor and some of it may even be new to them.  All others are advised to steer clear of this unfunny piece of shit.

YOU DON’T MESS WITH THE ZOHAN - Movie Review

you dont mess with the zohan

A Mossad agent orchestrates a scenario that will allow him to move to New York City and reinvent himself as a hairstylist.

TRUE DUDES REVIEW:

Movie don’t get much dumber than this.  While better than Adam Sandler’s previous effort   (I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry), Zohan doesn’t come close to his classics (Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore).  I always expect better from Adam Sandler, but he just keeps letting me down.

I haven’t really liked an Adam Sandler film since Mr. Deeds.  His shit is just not that funny anymore.  Zohan is about on par with Anger Management.  I definitely laughed a few times, but only a few.  Sandler is likable, but the movie is so fucking retarded that I was embarrassed to be laughing.  Every joke was either sexual or racial, but it was typical Sandler (nothing we haven’t seen before).  For a 13 or 14 year old kid, this flick is probably hilarious.  But to an adult who has seen Sandler at his best, it’s just a rehash of his better film’s.

SON OF RAMBOW - Movie Review

son of rambow

SON OF RAMBOW is the name of the home movie made by two little boys with a big video camera and even bigger ambitions. Set on a long English summer in the early 80’s, SON OF RAMBOW is a comedy about friendship, faith and the tough business of growing up.

TRUE DUDES REVIEW:

Son of Rambow is a film for the movie lover or amateur film-maker in all of us.  It perfectly captures youthful ambitions, fears, and dreams and helps remind us all what it was like being a kid.

Son of Rambow is a wonderfully fun and funny film.  This movie easily put a smile on my face.  It does a great job of showing the bond between best friends and how daydreaming can lead to so much more.  The two young stars were hilarious and perfect for the roles. The film’s only drawback was it’s occasional slow pace.  But watching the two kids film there action/adventure movie was alot of fun and seeing the finished product was heartwarming.

WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS - Movie Review

what happens in vegas

Joy and Jack meet while on a Las Vegas bender, where their drunken nuptials are only part of a larger problem: What to do when Jack wins $3 million with Joy’s quarter, and they are forced to spend six months as wife and husband if they are to see a penny of their winnings.

TRUE DUDES REVIEW:

A ridiculous premise, ridiculous overacting, with ridiculous characters make for a film that is, you guessed it, fucking ridiculous. I didn’t hate this movie. I have to admit that I did laugh a couple of times, but I’m totally embarrassed about it.

For starters, this is so far from being able to ever actually happen it’s insane. Had the main characters been smarter, they could have avoided the whole retarded mess. Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz play the main characters like a couple of loonies. These two wackos should be locked up. Their wild overacting further mars what was only mediocre to begin with. The film ends predictably sweet and near the finale the acters do tone things down a bit. While I’m definitely not recommending this film, it’s not the worst piece of shit I have ever seen.

IF STALLONE LOVES IT, YOU SHOULD TOO.

son of rambow

No, this story is not about growth hormones. A couple of months ago we ran the trailer for the enjoyable and nostalgically fun looking Son of Rambow. Now if you had any doubts that this film should be awesome, Marion Cobretti is hear to put those to rest. The following is an interview with Stallone from the LA Times:

“When I first heard . . . I assumed it was going to be a very broad and stylized joke-a-minute comedy at Rambo’s expense,” Sylvester Stallone said by e-mail. But he took a look at “Son of Rambow,” the playfully rambunctious tale of two boys in 1980s small-town England, and liked what he saw.

“The fact that it was so heartwarming is the result of brilliant film making by its creators,” Stallone said.

What more do you need? As far as I’m concerned if Ray Tango said it, it’s gospel.
